Astrophysics 2

Understand the mechanisms and environments of supernova explosions and their remnants. Understand the nucleosynthesis occurring in supernova explosions and the role supernovae play in the cosmic chemical evolution of the elements.

Project description:

Both numerical (theoretical) and observational projects are available, including:

  • hydrodynamical simulations of thermonuclear supernova explosions performed on high-performance computers
  • calculations of nucleosynthesis products with nuclear reaction networks
  • observations of the optical emission of supernova remnants with integral field spectrographs on some of the world's biggest and most advanced telescopes

Desired background:

A BSc in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or related preferred. A Masters degree (by research) or research experience is an asset. The successful applicant would need to meet the Australian Government H1E standards and UNSW entry standards.
