This project investigates the fundamental processes driving dynamic bushfire propagation by combining advanced computational modelling with cutting‑edge wildfire observations to improve fire behaviour prediction, safety, and risk management.
As fire weather conditions worsen, bushfires can exhibit dynamic modes of propagation, which can lead to rapid escalation, loss of containment, deterioration of firefighter and public safety and extreme bushfire development. Understanding the fundamental processes that result in dynamic bushfire behaviour and propagation is therefore a critical area of enquiry. This project will combine computational modelling with state-of-the-art wildfire observation to develop scientifically rigorous dynamic fire propagation models that integrate with fire safety and risk management systems.
BSc in mathematics, physics, meteorology, BEng (mech), or equivalent preferred. Masters by research or practical experience is an asset. The successful applicant would need to meet the Australian Government H1 or H2A standards and UNSW entry standards.
