Acoustics is the study of the propagation of low-frequency mechanical waves in matter. These waves may be quantized, and the study of these waves at the level of their quantum zero-point fluctuations has been termed quantum acoustics. Quantum acoustics has the potential to impact the design of quantum computers. The leading approach at present is based on superconducting metals, measured and controlled by microwave fields. However, more compact and lower loss devices could be realized by replacing microwave fields with acoustic fields. This technology will rely upon a quantum acoustic circuit theory, as shall be developed in this Project.
