Project aims are the study of the impact of rare earths used strategically within perovskite structures to enhance and/or facilitate a range of material properties. Such as magnetism for spintronics or magnetic cooling, electrical properties for electronics and solar cells, optical properties for up-conversion or radiation detection.
Technological demands continually feed a need for novel and improved materials across a range of applications. Perovskite based materials, both oxide and halide forms, for example, have proven useful in a range of applications: magnetism in spintronics and magnetic cooling, electrical properties for specialist electronics and for solar cells, optical properties for up-conversion or radiation detection with optical readout. Use of rare earth doping can contribute to the further development of desirable properties applied to these technologies. This research field spans multiple disciplines including materials science, physics, and chemistry, and advanced research methods and experimentation. Such as temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, magnetic, electrical and other physical property measurements (using a PPMS), and optical spectroscopies.
A Bachelors degree with honours 1 in Physics or equivalent. Experience with measurements in magnetism, solid state sample preparation and diffraction techniques (x-ray and or neutron) desirable. The successful applicant would need to meet the Australian Government H1E standards and UNSW entry standards.
