A joint initiative of the UNSW Law Faculty and Law Society, the program supports new law students through regular weekly group meetings, social events, and skills workshops.

It also seeks to educate students about mental health issues, promote collegiality within the Law Society, and encourage involvement within the Law Faculty, Law Society, and university life. Students are randomly allocated into groups to foster diverse friendships in a welcoming environment, with two mentors guiding them through the transition to law school.

Student Legal Education Group (SLEG)

About the program

Founded at UNSW over 30 years ago, the Student Legal Education Group (SLEG) is a non-profit organisation that is improving access to justice through free workshops and seminars. Trained UNSW Law & Justice students will have the chance to educate vulnerable and disadvantaged groups about their legal rights in practical and meaningful ways.

UNSW undergraduate and Juris Doctor students can join SLEG to build public speaking and teamwork skills while applying legal knowledge to support local and regional communities. Schools and community groups can request free, customised presentations tailored to specific needs and year levels.

SLEG modules

The SLEG modules have been developed by UNSW Law & Justice students in conjunction with members of the Law & Justice faculty and the Kingsford Legal Centre. These resources are updated each year and written with the NSW Education Standards Authority curricular specifically in mind, so they can be tailored to suit the needs of the classroom and syllabus.

Modules include:

  • Criminal Law and Police Powers
  • Human Rights
  • Employment Law and Consumer Rights

Presentations can also include a discussion on university life, UNSW scholarship options and the experience of studying a Law & Justice degree.

SLEG programs

SLEG caters to a variety of participants across four key programs. Audiences range from school groups to community centres and extend to rural and Indigenous youths.

  • Sydney Schools Program
  • SLEG in collaboration with ASPIRE Outreach Program
  • Community Program
  • Regional Program

The Regional Program invites a team of dedicated SLEG presenters to travel to rural NSW to facilitate presentations at local schools and community centres. SLEG presenters have the opportunity to work with lawyers and academics to refine and develop modules, as well as share their experiences as UNSW Law & Justice students. Recruitment for the Regional Program operates separately to the annual presenter intake, so all Law & Justice students are welcome to apply.

Contact and resources

For more information, recruitment, or workshop requests, contact SLEG via email or visit their Facebook page.
