Generally speaking, extra-curricular activities are an extension of the formal learning experiences that a student has been exposed to in a course or academic program. These experiences are designed to further enhance learning and compliment the program or course curriculum. These activities may be organised by the Faculty, a Student Society or UNSW unit.

UNSW Employability offers the following extracurricular opportunities.


  • The Employability team have given guest lectures and facilitated workshops including:

    • Personal Branding and online networking
    • Introduction to careers and career planning
    • Career success – globally and locally
    • Finding work internationally and in Australia

  • In addition to tailored seminars, UNSW Employability offers central workshops accessible to all students at all stages. These workshops are offered during O-week as well as regularly throughout the three terms. Some of these include:

    • Writing a successful resume and cover letter
    • Preparing for and attending interviews
    • Applying for graduate program and internships
    • Assessment centres
    • LinkedIn and online networking
    • Strategies for successful job seeking
    • How to impress at employer events
    • Addressing selection criteria

Best practice examples

  • UNSW Empoyability collaborated with the Art and Design team to deliver lectures for both undergraduate and postgraduate students focused on career planning and finding employment. These sessions were offered to students during a non-teaching week to allow as many students as possible to attend, without impacting their class attendance.

  • Partnering with Student Life and Communities, the Employability team have delivered sessions within the Leadership Program focused on personal branding and networking skills to assist them to identify suitable volunteer opportunities as part of the program.
