The climate crisis is an urgent and existential challenge. Law plays a crucial role in shaping how governments, businesses and communities respond, making it a powerful driver of mitigation, adaptation and accountability.
In our Law & Justice 2030 strategy, we recognise the central role of law in supporting the transition to renewable energy, protecting a rapidly changing environment and promoting justice and equity for communities most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Our leadership

The Centre for Sustainable Development Reform, a joint initiative of Law & Justice and the Faculty of Science, is catalysing ambitious reforms in law, policy and governance to support zero-carbon transitions, protect biodiversity and foster inclusive, sustainable economies.
The Centre’s work spans major global partnerships, including the Pacific Blue Shipping Partnership and the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership, which are reshaping how nations measure progress and manage environmental and economic sustainability.

UNSW is home to the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law, a world leader in research on climate-related displacement.
Under the leadership of Scientia Professor Jane McAdam AO, the Centre’s Climate Mobility Hub has played a key role in shaping international legal and policy frameworks to protect people forced to move due to climate disasters and environmental change.
This work strengthens global responses to climate displacement and centres human rights and dignity in climate governance.
