When a material is stressed there is a resulting strain. If the stress is low (by the standards of the material) the strain will be what is termed elastic strain. This type of strain is caused by stretching of the bonds in the material. If the force on the material is released, the strain is removed and the material reverts to its initial (pre-strain) dimensions.
