Master of Commerce Overview

The UNSW MCom stands out for its strong industry connections, real-world learning and global reputation. Designed in consultation with industry and guided by the leading academics and professionals at UNSW Business School, it combines academic rigour with practical application to prepare you for success. 

You’ll build your expertise through a combination of core commerce courses, electives and specialisation subjects, with the opportunity to focus on up to two areas from a choice of 15, including AccountingFinanceInternational Business and Marketing. Entry requirements

The degree’s admission requirements are based on you having a recognised undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification) with a credit average (WAM 65% or higher), as determined by the UNSW Business School. You may be considered eligible if your undergraduate degree WAM is between 60-64% and your score for the GMAT is at least 600 for the GMAT Exam or at least 565 for the GMAT Focus Edition.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you’ve studied an undergraduate degree that relates to the areas of business you’d like to study, you could be eligible for up to 24 Units of Credit (UOC), or four courses of RPL. These credit points will allow you to take fewer subjects and graduate sooner.  

Admission pathways

If you don't meet the entry requirements, you may be eligible to study the Graduate Certificate in Commerce a pathway into the Master of Commerce. Upon successful completion, your Graduate Certificate in Commerce courses may be credited towards your MCom.

English language requirements

 

You may be asked to provide evidence of your English proficiency to study at UNSW depending on your educational background and citizenship. English language skills are vitally important for coping with lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations - this is why UNSW requires a minimum English language competency for enrolment.

If you’re completing an Australian Year 12 qualification (e.g. NSW HSC or equivalent), you do not need to provide anything extra to prove your proficiency. Your qualification will be used as evidence of your English proficiency.

If you do need to provide evidence of your English proficiency, this will be indicated in your application. You can prove this by providing evidence that you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • English language tests and university English courses
  • Prior study in the medium of English
  • Other qualifications

If you need to improve your English skills before you start your degree, UNSW College’s Academic English Programs are for you. The programs are suitable for various English levels and help you prepare for university studies and life in Australia.

Note: Applicants from non-211 universities in China wishing to study Postgraduate Coursework in the UNSW Business School must achieve a minimum overall average of 88 in their current university’s grading system. This is equivalent to an 85% Australian scaled average using the calculator.

What will I study?

UNSW is introducing a new academic calendar from 2028.

We are moving to a new flex-semester calendar. What does this mean for your studies? 

Program structure

The UNSW Master of Commerce is a 1.7-year full-time program comprising 12 courses. Part-time study is also available. 

You’ll complete core commerce subjects covering areas such as ethics and data literacy, as well as a Coding for Business course, a capstone or practicum and courses aligned to your chosen specialisation/s. If you choose one specialisation, you’ll have the option to take business or free electives.

If you’d like more flexibility to take additional electives, you may want to consider the Master of Commerce (Extension) which follows the same curriculum but includes extra time to explore a broader range of subjects. 

Full program structure

Students must complete 72 units of credit (UOC). This can be achieved by completing either one specialisation with a mix of business and free electives, or two specialisations.
