About WIL
Real work. Real experience. Real learning.
Work integrated learning (WIL) connects academic learning with practical workplace experience, enabling students to apply the knowledge and skills developed through their studies in authentic professional settings. This approach supports the Progress for All strategy by contributing to multidisciplinary solutions that address societal challenges in Australia and globally, while enhancing students’ employability.
What is WIL?
- Placements (including internships and clinical placements) where students perform course-related work while embedded within a partner organisation.
- Projects where students deliver specific outcomes for a partner organisation which acts as a mentor and/or client throughout the activity.
WIL provides students with opportunities to engage with industry, community and government partners through interactive professional experiences that are intentionally designed, supported and assessed as part of their program of study. These experiences help students develop professional capabilities, strengthen their understanding of their discipline, and prepare them for future employment.
WIL may takes many forms, including:
- Placements, including internships and clinical placements
- Industry and community projects
How does WIL work?
At UNSW, WIL is delivered in partnership with host organisations across Australia and internationally, and can occur in offices, on campuses, online and more. These partnerships enable students to gain valuable practical experience while contributing meaningfully to industry, government and community environments.
WIL is designed to benefit all participants. Students develop professional skills, confidence and industry connections, whilst host organisations engage with emerging talent and contribute to student learning.
All WIL activities are supported by governance, risk management and quality assurance processes to promote safe, high-quality learning experiences that meet university, legislative and accreditation requirements.
