Lower Balonne May 2025 fish sampling
In May 2025, the first Flow-MER program fish sampling was undertaken across 20 sites on the Balonne, Birrie, Bokhara, Culgoa and Narran rivers of the Lower Balonne.
The team also conducted a second round of fish sampling at Narran Lakes, the first being in October 2024. Previous to this, fish surveys had not been undertaken at Narran Lakes since those conducted by Rolls and Wilson in 2008.
Check out the images of the team in the field.
Narran Lakes’ Clear Lake - Austral Research and Consulting undertake fish sampling in the Lower Balonne, including Narran Lakes, on behalf of the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
Narran Lakes’ Clear Lake - Unbaited cylindrical fyke nets, which rely on the fish to swim into them, are used to capture the fish.

Electrofishing, where a field of electricity is generated in the water, is an efficient fishing method that temporarily stuns fish, allowing them to be easily caught, data to be collected, and the fish returned to the water unharmed.

Backpack electrofishing is another technique used.
