What is Academic Standing?

Your academic standing helps UNSW monitor your academic progress each term.

It’s based on the units you’ve attempted and passed and is designed to help identify when extra support might be helpful.

Next steps for undergraduates

  • What do I do now?

You are not required to take any action.

Need help with your degree structure, progression, major selection or enrolment? Contact The Nucleus: Student Hub or use myPlan to review your future courses.

If you don’t know what support you need, reach out to a student support advisor to talk it through, and get help accessing the services and resources available at UNSW.

While it is not mandatory, we recommend that you make an appointment with a Program Specialist from UNSW Law & Justice by contacting The Nucleus: Student Hub.

Talking to your academic advisor should help identify some of the factors that are impeding your progression and help develop an action plan to address these factors.

We also encourage you to use the academic and support resources offered by UNSW. You can find information about a range of these support services at the bottom of this page.

Useful information and key terms

You might have heard these terms thrown around but not quite understood how they can impact you or help you and your degree progression.

We've included links below, so that you can do your own research. Want to know more? The team at The Nucleus: Student Hub can answer any questions you may have. If you're meeting with an academic advisor, they can talk through these with you too.

  • Feel like you need to take a break from your studies? Check to see if you're eligible to take Program Leave for an upcoming term(s) and make sure you apply before the relevant census date.

  • Did you know that you have until census date to drop a course without financial penalty? Each individual teaching period has a census date, so check our census dates page for all the details. There are a couple of other 'drop' deadlines that occur throughout each teaching period - find out more.

  • Fee Remission is the process by which you can apply for refund, remission or re-credit (whichever is applicable) for a course, or courses, after the census date, if you have been impacted by extenuating circumstances. Find out more about the process, eligibility, and the outcomes you can expect here.
