The UNSW Law Journal is one of Australia’s leading academic legal journals and one of the few to be entirely produced by a student board. It is UNSW Law’s flagship publication and one of the most widely cited legal reviews in Australia.

If you're an undergraduate law (LLB) or Juris Doctor student currently studying at UNSW, this is a fantastic opportunity to step into the world of legal publishing while making a lasting contribution to the university and Law School.

Recruitment process

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

  1. Have at least three terms remaining to complete at UNSW in Sydney at the time of applying.
  2. Be an enrolled law student at UNSW Sydney.
  3. Have a strong interest in editing academic articles. Prior editing experience is not required.

Recruitment to the Editorial Board comprises of a three-stage process:

  1. Applicants are required to submit their most recent academic transcript, their curriculum vitae and a cover letter detailing relevant skills, experience, and reasons for applying. 
  2. Applicants selected to proceed must complete a substantial editing exercise and attend an interview with members of the Executive Committee.
  3. The current members of the Board will hold a meeting to elect the best candidates to the Board.

If you identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander you will have the option to be paired up with a buddy from the Editorial Board during the recruitment process to help answer any questions. This is optional and will be offered to eligible applicants after submitting your application.

  • The Editorial Board is the body of students responsible for producing the UNSW Law Journal. The responsibilities of General Members of the Editorial Board include:

    • editing articles that are selected for publication in the Journal;
    • attending Editorial Board meetings; and
    • attending Journal Issue launch events, dinners and other social events. 
      • The Journal’s launches are held at the Sydney offices of its premier sponsors: Allens, Herbert Smith Freehills, King & Wood Mallesons and Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

    After serving as a General Member of the Board, members also have the opportunity to stand for election to the Executive Committee and assume editorial responsibility for an Issue of the Journal. Course credit is awarded for these positions.

  • Editing the Journal exposes students to the most recent critical analyses of legislation, legal policy and judicial decisions, and presents a unique opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the Law School. It also enables students to engage deeply with their legal research and writing skills.

    Membership of the Board attracts considerable prestige within the legal community, and in particular among employers and postgraduate scholarship committees. Journal alumni have held tipstaff or associate positions in various courts, including the High Court of Australia.

  • The Journal will hold an optional Recruitment Information Session at 1pm on Thursday, 5 March 2026. Members of the Journal's Executive Committee will provide more information about the recruitment process and provide applicants an insight into Journal life.
