Moodle troubleshooting
If you have a non-technical issue with your Moodle course, contact your lecturer first. For technical issues, support is available from The Nucleus: Student Hub.
Before reaching out, try these quick troubleshooting steps:
- Wait a little and try the action again later.
- Log out of Moodle, then log back in.
- Switch to a different browser (see system requirements for supported browsers).
- Close other programs that may be slowing your computer down.
- Restart or reboot your computer.
- Try using a different computer.
- Check that your login credentials work in myUNSW.
- Confirm your enrolments in myUNSW. If you recently changed your enrolments, allow at least 48 hours before accessing your Moodle courses.
-
If you’re having trouble logging in, here are a few things to check before reaching out for help:
- Check your zID and zPass
- In the USER ID field, ensure that you have typed a "z" before your student number. (Eg. z1234567)
- Your PASSWORD (your zPass) is case-sensitive. Check on your keyboard if Caps Lock is on or off.
- Are you enrolled?
- You’ll only get Moodle access if you’ve accepted your offer and have an active program record.
- Just enrolled or made changes?
- If you recently accepted your offer, changed programs, or updated enrolments, it can take up to 2 working days for access to update.
- Still can’t log in after 2 days? Contact The Nucleus: Student Hub.
- Graduated or discontinued?
- You’ll keep Moodle access for up to 90 days after you finish your program.
- After that, access can’t be reinstated. The Nucleus: Student Hub can help talk through your options if you still need course materials.
- Can’t access other UNSW services either?
- Try logging into myUNSW with your zID and zPass.
- If that doesn’t work, the IT Service Centre can help fix your login.
- You can also check the Identity Manager for Students for step-by-step self-help.
- Check your zID and zPass
-
If you can log in to Moodle but your course isn’t showing, here are some common reasons why:
- The term hasn’t started yet
- Courses only appear in your Moodle dashboard once your lecturer makes them available.
- Release times can vary, some courses may show up earlier or later around the start of term.
- Check your enrolments in myUNSW
- Make sure your enrolments are correct.
- If you recently changed your enrolments, it can take up to 2 working days for Moodle to update.
- If your course doesn’t appear properly in myUNSW, contact your lecturer.
- Recently updated enrolments
- Just enrolled or updated your courses? Allow up to 2 working days before checking Moodle again.
- Still not showing after 2 working days?
- Ask your lecturer if the course has been released on Moodle.
- If it has, double-check your Moodle dashboard filters to make sure the course isn’t hidden.
- If you still can’t see it, contact The Nucleus: Student Hub for support.
- Enrolled in ASU (YXXX) courses?
- Courses with a YXXX prefix (e.g. YMED1001, YENG5582) are delivered by Arizona State University (ASU), not Moodle.
- You’ll need to log into the ASU learning management system with your ASU-issued student ID and password (not your UNSW zID/zPass).
- For details, see the PLuS Alliance orientation page.
- Having trouble logging in or need a password reset? Contact ASU technical support.
- The term hasn’t started yet
For more than ten years, UNSW has provided staff with the ability to record lectures and share them with you through Lecture Recordings+ (Echo360/LR+).
This system supports your learning by offering:
High-quality audio and video playback
Reliable access to recordings
Engagement tools and analytics to help you study
How lecture recordings work
- All lectures and seminars in Lecture Recordings+ enabled venues are automatically recorded, unless your instructor choses to opt out.
- Lecture recordings can be accessed via your Moodle course, where you’ll also find tools such as bookmarks and notes to make studying easier.
-
Lecture recordings are designed to support your learning, not replace attendance. They’re there to help you replay, review, and reinforce what you’ve learned, and to catch up if illness or other issues stop you from being there in person.
Most lecturers expect you to attend in person unless you’re a distance student. That’s because some aspects of learning simply can’t be captured in a recording, such as:
- Live demonstrations, videos, or annotated slides.
- Group discussions, problem-solving, or interactive tasks.
- Content that prepares you for tutorials, labs, or practical sessions.
- Quizzes or in-class activities that rely on real-time participation.
- The opportunity for your lecturer to check your progress and give feedback.
-
There are educational and personal advantages to being in the room:
- Learn together – Meet classmates, share ideas, and build friendships.
- Build a routine – Regular timeslots help you stay consistent with study.
- Use study tools – Ask questions via the Discussions panel without interrupting.
- Get clarity – Ask your lecturer what you’d miss if you only watched the recording.
💡 Tip: It doesn’t have to be one or the other. Attending lectures and using recordings for review is the best way to maximise your learning.
-
Recordings are especially useful for:
- Exam revision and review of complex topics
- Working at your own pace
- Revisiting sections you missed or didn’t fully grasp
- Taking more detailed notes after class
- Checking content before approaching your lecturer with questions
If you can’t attend:
- Set a weekly routine for listening
- Watch the whole recording at least once, pausing to take notes and bookmark key points
- Engage with your peers and lecturers through the Discussions panel
If you’re studying off campus:
- Join in by responding to lecture questions
- Use online discussion forums to stay connected
- Treat recordings as part of your weekly schedule, not something to binge later
⚠️ Be careful: Falling behind is easy and hard to recover from. Recordings are just one part of your course, so keeping up week-by-week is vital.
Common problems and how to fix them
If you can’t access UNSW Lecture Recordings+ or something isn’t working as expected, the issue may be service-wide, Wi-Fi related, or specific to your device. Here’s how to troubleshoot.
-
If both staff and students can’t access Lecture Recordings+ (or the service isn’t working properly), it’s likely a system-wide problem.
Contact the IT Service Centre:
- Phone: (02) 9385 1333
- Email: itservicecentre@unsw.edu.au
The IT Service Centre will investigate and alert the TELT Support team if needed.
-
Lecture Recordings+ requires a stable internet connection to download slides, answer interactive questions, and save notes.
- At the start of lectures, many students connect to Uniwide at once. This may cause temporary slowdowns, but it usually resolves in a few minutes.
- If the problem continues, contact the IT Service Centre for help.
-
Sometimes the issue is with your own laptop, tablet, or phone. Common causes include:
- Corrupted browser cache.
- Security software blocking access.
- Other device settings.
What to do:
- Try a different web browser as a quick fix.
- After the lecture, call the IT Service Centre on (02) 9385 1333 for basic troubleshooting.
- If it still doesn’t work, you may need help from an external IT professional.
-
If the link is missing, it may be because:
- Lectures are not held in an Echo-enabled venue.
- Your instructor has opted out of recordings or chosen not to make them available.
- The link hasn’t been added to your Moodle course yet.
👉 If you’re unsure, check with your course convenor or instructor to confirm if LR+ will be used in your course.
-
If you see the Echo360 link in Moodle but the content won’t play or download:
- Clear your browser cache and make sure your browser is up to date.
- Try another browser as a quick workaround.
👉 If the issue continues, contact the IT Service Centre with these details:
- Your course ID
- The error message
- Your browser and version
