What is the Student Belonging Survey?

The Student Belonging Survey was started in 2024 as a way to directly communicate with the UNSW student community and drive meaningful change on campus based on this feedback.

We are always trying to make campus life the best experience possible for students, and this is why we want to hear from you.

Where the Student Belonging Survey stands out is how your feedback is genuinely taken on board, and everything you share with us directly influences student life at UNSW.

So when we say your voice matters, it truly does in big, impactful ways on campus - and all it takes is a few minutes.

What changes have come from the survey feedback?

Your feedback across the last couple of Student Belonging Surveys has resulted in several big changes to improve campus life. This includes:

The creation of the Peer Mentoring Hub to better support student mentors and program coordinators in building stronger, more effective mentoring programs;
The introduction of Food Security programs and additional free food options to help students access nutritious meals; and
The First Year Festival, a one-day event designed to help first-year students connect with their faculty and student services to ensure they have all the skills they need to succeed in their second year and beyond. In addition to freebies, such as free food, Messina gelato and merchandise, some notable highlights of the festival include:
- Over 2,000 attendees since the inaugural edition in 2024; and
- An average student satisfaction rating of 4.4/5 stars.

Over 10,000 students have engaged with the survey during the project. The results show an upward trend of students feeling a stronger sense of community,

For undergraduate students, the percentage of those who have said that their sense of belonging has improved jumped from 33.9 per cent in 2021 to 48.7 per cent in 2025. For postgraduate students, that number has jumped from 33.2 per cent in 2021 to 50.9 per cent in 2025.

Overall, 46 per cent of students who have been at UNSW for two years or more saying that their sense of belonging has increased, demonstrating that your voice matters and your feedback can instill positive changes.

Jordan Ho, who attended FYF24 as a first-year Bachelor of Design student, but changed to Bachelor of Commerce/Design in her second year after connecting with other faculties at the festival.
