Verifying your domestic residency status
Ensure your citizenship or permanent residency status is confirmed to access financial assistance from the government.
Why does your residency status need to be verified?
If you are a domestic student and you commenced your studies at UNSW this term, you are required to provide the University with proof of your citizenship or residency status.
The University checks your residency to ensure you are enrolled in the right type of fee place and confirm your eligibility for government assistance, including:
In line with the Higher Education Support Act 2003, UNSW has the responsibility of advising students of their eligibility for Commonwealth Government support. As a domestic student, you are required to provide evidence of your residency status so we can confirm your eligibility to access these financial support resources.

When you're submitting your residency verification request, you will need to bring ONE original* official document listed below:
- Australian citizenship certificate
- Current Australian passport
- Full Australian birth certificate (can only be used if you were born before 20 August 1986)
*Copies of official documents can be accepted if they are certified by a Justice of the Peace (JP).
Don't have any of the documents above?
If you were born after 20 August 1986 AND you don't have a current Australian passport or citizenship certificate, you can provide the below instead:
- Full Australian birth certificate, AND
- Documents showing min. one parent (named on the birth certificate) is an Australian citizen at the time of your birth, including:
- Your parent's Australian citizenship certificate showing they acquired their citizenship before your birth, OR
- Your parent's Australian birth certificate showing your parent was born in Australia before 20 August 1986, OR
- If your parent was also born in Australia on/after 20 August 1986, you can provide documents showing your grandparent was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth, such as your grandparent's Australian citizenship certificate or birth certificate.
How to verify your residency
- Prepare the relevant official document. If you cannot bring your original documents, copies can be accepted if they have been certified by a Justice of the Peace (JP).
