OS-HELP is a loan available to eligible students enrolled in a Commonwealth-supported place (CSP) who want to undertake some of their study overseas.

OS-HELP can be used for a range of expenses such as airfares, accommodation and other travel or study expenses. You are limited to one OS-HELP loan per 6-month study period and two OS-HELP loans over your lifetime.

  • In 2024, the maximum you can borrow for a six-month study period is:

    • AU$7,921 - country outside of Asia
    • AU$9,504 - studying in Asia
    • AU$1,263 - additional if undertaking Asian language study in preparation for overseas study in Asia

Note: You must request a minimum of $1,000 but are not obliged to apply for the maximum amount available.

The amount you are loaned depends on the overall OS-HELP funding available to UNSW.

The amounts above are the maximum that can be loaned in a calendar year. If you are applying above the current year’s maximum for the following year, this will not be paid until after 1 January. Keep this in mind when arranging flight, accommodation and other expense purchases.

The Asian language study supplementary amount does not count towards the lifetime maximum of two OS‑HELP loans. We will aim to provide this funding before you leave for your overseas study.

FAQs

  • No, usually not as eligibility is checked against your current program.

A separate master’s program will have its own eligibility requirements. This usually includes completing 48 UOC of your master’s program and having at least 6 UOC of study left after you return to Australia. Master’s by research students are not eligible to access an OS-HELP loan.

  • This depends on if your honours is part of your current undergraduate program or if it is considered a separate program.

If your honours is part of your undergraduate program, you may be eligible for OS-HELP if all the criteria are met.

If your honours is a separate program completed after you finish your undergraduate program, it will not be counted towards the 6 UOC as eligibility is checked against your current program.

  • Yes, but it must be approved before your overseas study ends.
