Respect the ride: Being a considerate public transport passenger
Being kind and respectful on public transport makes the journey better for everyone!
Being kind and respectful on public transport makes the journey better for everyone!
Let's set the scene: It's ridiculously early in the morning, you've managed to squeeze onto the next train/light rail/bus to UNSW and it's just packed with people who keep invading your personal space.
It truly is a test of patience, physicality and mental fortitude — and chances are that you've yet to have your first coffee to properly start the day.
But it doesn't have to be that way!
While we may not have the power to conjure up spacious trains and light rails out of thin air, we can definitely make each journey as comfortable as possible. Plus, if we make the most of it by being kind instead of the opposite, the trip is better for everyone.
So with that in mind, let's take a quick look at some easy tips that'll make a world of difference next time you're on public transport.

When on public transport, there are plenty of small things you can do to make the trip comfortable for everyone. The best part is that it takes very little to no effort, so here are our top tips for making public transport journeys just that little bit better for everyone.
If you're seated on public transport and you see an older person, someone with disability or impaired mobility, someone who is pregnant or someone travelling with children, offer them your seat as they may need it more than you.
Keep the doors clear of any bags, boards, bikes or the like so people can board and exit without any obstruction. The more smoothly people can board or exit, the faster the journey will be!
If it's super crowded, save space by carrying your backpack by the handle. If you're standing, consider placing your backpack on the floor between your feet instead to avoid bumping others.
Take up only one seat, especially when others are standing, and keep your feet (and backpack) off the seats. No need to be 'that' person.
Headphones are your best friend here. If you need to take a phone call, try to speak as quietly as possible.
Put any rubbish in the bins provided when you're at a stop. If you need to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with your arm so it doesn't get all over other people. No one likes that.
