Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme
UNSW proudly supports the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower exists to help those with disabilities that are not immediately obvious such as autism, chronic pain, dementia, anxiety, visual or hearing impairment. It is about supporting people with a hidden disability, making the invisible, visible and helping them attain the understanding, patience and assistance needed when going about their daily lives.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower provides a simple, internationally recognised symbol for people with non-visible disabilities to voluntarily share they may need a helping hand.
By wearing the bright green lanyard, lapel or wristband with yellow sunflowers on it, people can discreetly flag their hidden disability and that they may need additional support.
Sunflower lanyards are available for students at the Nucleus Hub, Equitable Learning Services and Arc Reception office on Kensington campus.
Staff can organise to collect a lanyard by contacting: edi@unsw.edu.au
How can you show your support for the scheme and people with non-visible disability?
All students and staff can complete the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower online training module to increase their awareness of non-visible disabilties and the importance of creating inclusive environments.
Everyone who completes the training can arrange to get a sunflower supporter badge to signal their allyship and support if people require additional help or information.
