Students undertake an investigation to more deeply discover scientific concepts.

Year 12 Chemistry Depth Studies at UNSW School of Chemistry (on-campus)

Analytical, Computational, and Synthetic on-campus excursions available from:

  • 22 April – 24 May 2024
  • 5 August – 6 September 2024
  • 18 November – 6 December 2024

The UNSW Chemistry Depth Studies aim to engage Year 11 and 12 students in real world research applications of chemistry. These extensions to the HSC Syllabus provide support for teachers leading Depth Studies at their schools and the opportunity for students to partake in hand-on experiments led by academics and senior PhD students.

The depth studies consist of online lesson plans and resources, suggested assessments and a capstone excursion to the UNSW Chemistry laboratories. In this capstone excursion, students will engage with authentic scientific research in hands-on experiments, as well as have the opportunity to engage directly with researchers to discuss science, university and careers.

These depth studies link current research, including by UNSW researchers, with teaching, extending students, developing their STEM confidence, and encouraging them to visualise themselves in STEM careers. Further, the depth studies are designed to bridge the gap between high school and university science skills by introducing university data analysis using information technology tools, independent research components, and scientific debate.
