So what exactly is happening?

As part of the UNSW Campus Development Plan, a new Education Building (G25) will be built on the UNSW Kensington campus and will be a major teaching and learning facility for the university. This will be a 12-storey building located at Upper Campus, right next to the Mathews Building. As one might expect from a cutting-edge building reaching a dozen storeys high, there's a lot of work that needs to be done.

From mid-May 2026, construction of the G25 Education Building will move into the 'excavation and piling works' phase and run until October.

Site location for the G25 development.

Wait, construction work? Does that mean noise?

Bingo, lots of noise indeed. Oh, and vibrations because of all the excavation work. These are times and days to be mindful of during this phase of construction:

⏰ 7am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday

Please note: There will be intermittent rest periods beween 12pm to 2pm during the rock hammering phase.

Okay, how will this affect my fellow students and me?

Great question!

With this excavation and piling works phase of construction being the most intensive phase of the project, you may experience increased construction noise and intermittent vibrations during working hours.

UNSW will be implementing mitigation measures to reduce this noise and vibration impact, such as bored piling, acoustic baffles for the hoarding, and real-time noise and vibration monitoring.

Is there anything I can I do?

Yes, there is!

Noise and vibrations generally don't make for good study music (unless you don't mind it), so there are a few things you can do to minimise the impact of the ongoing construction:

  1. Plan ahead: If you need a quiet environment for studying, research or activities, best to plan in advance so you can avoid the worst of the noise during working hours.
  2. Alternative spaces: Consider swapping your usual Upper Campus work or study space to a temporary new location that's less impacted by the construction work. Who knows, you may end up finding a favourite new spot.
  3. Be flexible: Construction work can be unpredictable, especially during peak periods, so make sure your schedule is flexible during the planned May-October work period.
