Project: Probing the Dynamical History of Galaxy Clusters with Intra-Cluster Light

Supervised by: Prof Sarah Brough

Project description:

Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally bound structures in the universe, and each is home hundreds to thousands of host galaxies. They are also home to a diffuse population of stars that are not bound to any individual galaxy, but are instead bound to the cluster itself. These stars make up a feature we call Intra-Cluster Light (ICL). Through the population of stars in the ICL, as well as its physical distribution and total brightness, we can infer details about the assembly history of the clusters. I will be preparing for and utilizing data from the upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), with the goal of large sample size analyses of galaxy clusters.
