Big data on the unit sphere

Abstract:

In this talk, I will describe my encounter with big data sets when doing research in computational methods for mathematical problems defined on the unit sphere. Examples are data sets that describe the topography or the magnetic field of the earth, cosmic microwave background data or weather data. Particular problems and challenges with handling those big data will be discussed.
