The School holds and supports several events for Postgraduate students throughout the year. These include social events, seminars, careers sessions, and conferences.
We host a Welcome for New PhD Students at the beginning of each trimester, where students can meet and socialise over drinks.
We organise an annual Postgraduate Conference, where all postgraduate students are given the opportunity to present their research. We have a webpage dedicated to this event, check it out.
A Postgraduate Seminar Series is run each year; this is organised by students for students. This is a forum where students can present to their peers about a mathematical topic of broad interest (whether from their own research, or on a completely different topic). Our Seminars webpage publishes details of these sessions, so keep an eye on it.
UNSW Science runs an annual Student Research Expo, open to Honours, Masters, and PhD students. The event, generally held in July, is a showcase of the outstanding student research across the Faculty.
We encourage our students to enter and participate. The event is comprised of an open exhibition of student research posters, plus a one-minute presentation by each student about their research. The expo includes a free lunch, a drinks reception, and a prize-giving ceremony.
Our Postgraduate students are invited - and encouraged to attend - the "Beyond Your Maths Degree" session at our annual Advanced Mathematics Day each September. The session features speakers hailing from industry, plus School alumni. To cap off the event, we host a drinks gathering which gives students an opportunity to socialise and network.
We have also held social soccer matches where Postgrad students and School staff members go head-to-head to compete for glory on UNSW's Village Green.
