Abstract

The equation X+X = X looks pretty easy to solve. In this talk, we explain how, if we make it much more complicated than it needs to be, we can obtain all sorts of interesting mathematical objects including: Cantor space, a machine for manipulating the input stream of a computer program, and various combinatorial objects familiar from topological dynamics.
