Abstract

I will discuss symmetry from a combinatorial perspective. Examples include wallpaper groups, 4-valent graphs,  regular languages, molecules,  Penrose tilings,  and geometric 3-manifolds. It turns out that for each of these classes there is a finite universal geometric object that encodes all the possibilities.
