Abstract

A rational function of degree n in one variable has (2n-2) critical points.  Given (2n-2) points, the number of rational functions that have those as critical points turns out to be the n-th Catalan number.  I will explain a higher-dimensional generalisation of this phenomenon and the myriad of questions that it opens up.
