This special presentation of mathematical magic by Professor Antonietta Mira is hosted by the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW. It will be followed by a networking reception with finger food and refreshments.

About the presentation

Join us for a special mathematical magic show presented by Professor Antonietta Mira, who will perform magic tricks based around mathematical principles, followed by engaging explanations of the maths behind each feat. This interactive session is designed for anyone with a curious mind and the ability to count, suitable for all ages from 9 to 99.

All welcome - don’t miss this unique opportunity to explore the beauty and wonders of mathematics while being entertained by the art of illusion!

About the speaker

Professor of Statistics at Università della Svizzera italiana (Switzerland) and Insubria University (Italy), Antonietta Mira collaborates with prestigious international universities, including Harvard (USA), Oxford (UK), Cambridge (UK), and QUT (Australia). She is a Fellow of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the Istituto Lombardo Academy of Science and Letters.

Antonietta dedicates considerable time and energy to science dissemination and has published an award-winning book on the "Coronadata Pandemic" (2020). Through television, radio, and journalistic media, she actively promotes the culture of Data Science.

Passionate about magic and sleight of hand based on mathematical principles, she was introduced to Vanni Bossi, then president of the Milan Magic Circle, by her colleague and friend Persi Diaconis, a professor at Stanford. Under the expert guidance of Maestro Vanni, she deepened her understanding of both the history and the art of conjuring and published the book Mate-Magica ("Mathemagics") in 2012. The most attentive and curious spectators of her mathematical-magic performances are hospitalised children, whom Antonietta visits as a volunteer clown doctor.
