Abstract:

This starts with five frequently cited papers by Landau, Pollack and Slepian in the Bell Systems Technical Journal (1961--1962, 1964, 1978).  A simplified explanation follows of the use of LPS made in the book `Non-commutative Geometry, Quantum Fields and Motives' by Alain Connes & Matilde Marcolli in an attempt to prove the RH.  Here `Motives' is used in the (highly non-trivial) sense of Alexander Grothendieck.
