How to study Commerce with Mathematics or Statistics at UNSW
Choose the four-year combined degree in commerce and science with a Major in one of the business disciplines and in Mathematics or Statistics. Administered by UNSW Business School together with the School of Mathematics and Statistics in the Faculty of Science, this is a full Commerce degree with the extra studies in Mathematics or Statistics that will make the degree more attractive and competitive when looking for employment.
Students with good results may continue for another year (total 5 years) to complete Honours in the commerce discipline, Mathematics or Statistics.
Most students choose to combine Mathematics or Statistics with Finance or Actuarial Studies, and there are others who choose to combine Business Statistics with Statistics, but any discipline within commerce can be combined with Mathematics or Statistics.
See 3529 - Commerce/Science in the UNSW Handbook for more information.
What do I study in the course?
In first year, you will study Mathematics, Computing (recommended), Accounting and Financial Management, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and the Commerce discipline. Statistics studies start in year 2.
At the end of year 1, it may be possible for you to swap between majors in Commerce or to swap the Mathematics or Statistics majors to another Science major. In later years this becomes difficult without having to take a longer time to complete the degree. It is not possible to transfer between degree programs without reapplying for admission.
Mathematics and Statistics can be studied at the Ordinary level or at the Higher level depending on your interests and abilities, but study at the Higher level is recommended and may be necessary for certain courses in later years.
To find out more about which courses to take, please see Program and Course Details below.
For formal details and informal descriptions of individual Mathematics and Statistics courses, see the Details of Courses page.
Program and course details
The combined BCom/BSc degree requires:
- 96 UOC of Commerce, including a major and specified Level I courses
- 96 UOC of Science, including a major and at least 24 UOC of Level I Science courses
Units of Credit values are as follows:
- ALL Commerce courses are 6 UOC each
- Science courses MATH###1 are 6 UOC each
- Science courses MATH###0 are 3 UOC each
Each semester is 24 units of credit. NO General Education is required.
Mathematics and Statistics courses are shown at the Higher level but can be taken at the Ordinary level. The selection of Mathematics and Statistics options taken should have the approval of the Mathematics and Statistics Program advisor.
Note that MATH1141 and MATH1241 Higher Mathematics 1A/B may be replaced by MATH1151 and MATH1251 Mathematics for Actuarial Studies and Finance 1A/B.
Particular care needs to be taken in choosing Level II options to ensure that prerequisites for Level III options are met.
The Objective 5 General Education requirements are met within the Commerce courses.
Note that extra Science courses other than Mathematics are required to meet the rules above, particularly in First Year.
All students should check with the Science Student Centre that they meet the requirements of the Science component of the Combined degree. The School of Mathematics and Statistics cannot decide this.
Courses in the various stages can be taken in different years provided prerequisites are met, and ordinary level courses can replace the higher where appropriate.
