Becoming a PhD student: What does it take?

Abstract:

The goal of this information session is to give some insight into the application process for PhD positions in Australia and overseas.

Applying for PhD programs is a complex process, from finding the information you need (e.g., scholarships) to taking various tests, writing applications and going through interviews. Besides, this process differs from country to country.

The event will start with a short session for 2nd year students. More precisely, building a strong PhD application starts with building a strong background and record from early years of undergraduate studies. The event will continue with the usual information session for 3rd and 4th year students (but everyone is welcome to attend!) outlining the application process for PhD positions in Australia, UK and USA.

The schedule of the event is as follows:

5:00 - 5:30 pm  -- Mr. Ray Li (Master student at University of Cambridge and future PhD student at University of Chicago) will talk about applying for a PhD program, and in particular what you should start building on starting with your 2nd year.

5:40 - 6:20 pm -- A/Prof. Ian Doust (Director of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, UNSW) will talk about the opportunities of doing a PhD in Australia (and will also discuss our programs at UNSW)

6:30 - 7:00 pm -- Mr. Ray Li will talk about applying for a PhD program in USA

7:10 - 7:40 pm -- Mr. Peter Bradshaw (PhD student at University of Bristol) will talk about applying for a PhD program in UK, and also give you an insight into what it takes to be a succesful PhD student.
