There is a significant under-representation of women enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs at University.

Our Data Science and Decisions Ambassador program provides an opportunity to help get the balance right.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics offers a limited number of one-year Ambassador roles to women studying the Bachelor of Data Science and Decisions.

Responsibilities

The primary role of a Student Ambassador is to assist with the promotion of the Bachelor of Data Science and Decisions, and to encourage the participation of women in this degree. Ambassadors will become involved in outreach activities and events within the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

This may involve providing information on the Data Science and Decisions program to prospective students, assisting with the development of data science workshops and activities, and delivering engaging presentations aimed at high school students.

**Applications are now closed for the 2022 program.

2023 program

Applications for the 2023 program will open in March 2023. Keep an eye on this page for updates. All women students of the Bachelor of Data Science and Decisions will be emailed an invitation to apply.

Our Data Science and Decisions Ambassadors assist us with our annual Girls Do the Maths workshop. This includes help with developing activities and other organisational assistance for the online and on-campus versions of the event. The event is aimed at Years 10-12 girls in high school.

Applicants must be available to attend the Girls Do the Maths workshop on campus in June, and may be required to contribute to the online event the following day.

Ambassadors may be invited to participate in other events during the year, such as UNSW Open Day in September.

You can email Susannah Waters with enquiries about the program.

Accreditation

The Data Science and Decisions Ambassador program is accredited by UNSW Advantage, and students' participation will be listed on their Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS).

Ambassadors must complete at least 20 hours' work with us during the year in order to qualify for accreditation.

Training

An induction for Ambassadors will be held, where they will be informed of plans for the year and expected duties. Ambassadors will be provided with on-the-job training and mentoring from School of Mathematics and Statistics staff members and senior students as required.

Selection criteria

We seek Ambassadors with excellent communication skills who enjoy teamwork, are engaged in university life and their degree, and display a high level of professionalism.

We invite applications from women enrolled in any stage of the Bachelor of Data Science and Decisions degree.

Events

Some of the events that our Ambassadors have been involved with include UNSW Open Day, the Girls Do the Maths workshop, STEM Careers Week for Girls, the L'Oréal Girls in Science Expo, and the 2019 AMSI Summer School.
