I am an Associate Professor in Banking and Finance at UNSW Business School. I have conducted pioneering research on the Australian and Chinese venture capital and private equity markets. I have won both Australia Research Council Linkage and Discovery grants for research in this area. I have also undertaken funded research in conjunction with government and industry partners including Australian Investment Council (formerly the Australian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association), Queensland Investment corporation and the Innovation Division, Department of Industry.
I have been a director on the board of the Asian Finance Association since 2010. I developed an international annual online colloquium on venture capital and private equity in the Asia Pacific region, which I run in conjunction with the Asian Finance Association. This colloquium attracts global academic and industry participants.
My additional research interests include capital raising in debt and equity markets, corporate governance and Chinese financial markets. I have published widely in international journals, am an editorial board member of the Australian Journal of Management and present regularly at Australian and international conferences. I have previously held visiting positions at University of British Columbia, Canada and Singapore Management University.
My research broadly focuses on how different types of funding impact firms. In particular, my research program considers the impact of Venture Capital and Private Equity on firm outcomes. These outcomes include firm success, innovation and growth strategies such as takeovers. My research is international in focus and includes Australian, US and Chinese markets.
My research has been used by the industry association representative body (AVCAL) to support policy change initiatives in private equity in Australia and support policy development by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.
