Join us to celebrate the launch of The Elements of Dark Academia (Penguin Vintage), curated by award-winning anthologist Jared Shurin (ed. The Djinn Falls in Love; The Big Book of Cyberpunk). This anthology responds to the web-borne phenomenon of Dark Academia, a visual aesthetic, subculture, and now publishing niche which centres educational institutes as touched by Gothicism.

Jared Shurin and contributor Axel-Nathaniel Rose discuss Dark Academia from its campus novel roots to its digital birth, the significance of anthologies, and the work of the anthologist, drawing from Shurin’s curation of over two dozen anthologies and Rose’s six years of research on Dark Academia.

Bios

Jared Shurin has edited over two dozen anthologies, including The Elements of Dark Academia, The Djinn Falls in Love, The Lowest Heaven, The Outcast Hours, the Best of British Fantasy series, and The Big Book of Cyberpunk. He has been a finalist for the World Fantasy Shirley Jackson, Hugo, and British Fantasy Awards, amongst others. He currently writes about strategy, books, and pop culture at Raptor Velocity, publishes the flammable newspaper Kindling, and edits Shelfies with Lavie Tidhar.

Axel-Nathaniel Rose is an author and academic working at UNSW and UNE. He works across creative writing, literary studies, fan studies, queer studies, and book history. His research has been published in Axon: Creative Explorations, Transformative Works and Cultures, and Ludic Inquiries Into Power and Pedagogy in Higher Education. His short stories and poetry can be found in Unsweetened Literary Journal and Tharunka, and his novelette, ‘Stars, Hide Your Fires’, appears in The Elements of Dark Academia (ed. Shurin). He is the Access & Equity portfolio lead for the Australasian Association of Writing Programs and blogs editor for Southerly.
